Daan Hendriks 2010-10-06T15:55:10Z 2011-10-04T07:22:24Z
Hello,

I don't own a hydrophone yet so I can't try this out myself. Out of curiosity, I was just wondering if you can use a hydrophone like a contact mic? As far as I understand it both types of mic are essentially similar. So yes the question is: does a hydrophone also work when it's not submerged in water, if you'd strap it to any vibration producing source, would it record 'sound' the same way as a contact mic does.

Thanks! There are many different types, thicknesses etc, so which ones are best? Is strawberry flavored better than banana? just kidding! I'd also like to know what you have used to clean the mic afterwards?

I'm going to use a Sennheiser E845 (similar to an SM58, I actually prefer it to a 58!) and see what sounds I get.

Thanks in advance for your help.
http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/3282/pushing-your-hydrophone-to-the-limit Pushing your hydrophone to the limit Jay Jennings 2010-08-31T08:12:08Z 2010-09-20T08:55:09Z
Who has risked their microphone investment and have it pay off?

Submerged in boiling water

Frozen in ice

Dipped in liquids other than water, ie. syrup, molasses, oil, etc

Floated close to hazardous objects, ie. garbage disposal blades, propellors, etc

Something else even crazier than the above?

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/2324/hydrophone-recording Hydrophone Recording sepulchra 2010-07-27T21:47:51Z 2010-07-30T19:51:30Z
Hey Folks,

I have to record a variety of underwater movement and I'm in the process of doing some experimentation. I currently own 2 dolphin ear pros, but I'm not totally happy. I'm wondering if anyone can share their experiences and maybe share what sort of movement is most useful.

I have access to a pool and a lake.

Best,
Michael Raphael
http://rabbitearsaudio.com
http://sepulchra.com/blog/
