Basically I want a portable companion to my non-work life. I want to be able to listen to perfect and crisp music/videos/media without too much enhanced bass and a good sound stage. It would also be a plus to be able to do some basic work on the go.

To give you a feel of what I'll be using the headphones with, I mostly listen to (old) jazz, so the headphones that add/invent too much bass really destroys these recordings. I listen to a ton of audiobooks and podcasts. I also listen to a lot of electronic music such as Amon Tobin, Fourtet, Bonobo, Cinematic Orchestra, etc.

Most the time I will just be using my iPhone as a player.

Key concerns (ideally, I'm not that picky)

High quality sound: not exaggerated bass, or harsh trebles. Just well balanced, crisp sound and good sound stage.

Noise isolating: I mostly listen in public spaces or on airplanes, so being able to listen softly without hearing too much of the background is important.

Comfortable: I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts, so I wanna be able to wear them for hours without getting hot, claustrophobic, or get a headache. I also don't want to hear the mechanics of the headphones when I'm walking (crackle/thump/cable rustling too much).

Portable: I want to be able to fold them up and keep them in my bag. Doesn't need to be in-ear kind of small.

I don't want to look like a rapper ;-) Would rather not have massively loud (visually) beat phones.

What I have in mind

Sennheiser HD 25-1 II

B&W P5

Bose OE, I actually HATE the sound of them. They exaggerate the bass so much and muffle everything. But they are so comfortable! And a great size...

SoundMAGIC P30

Audio-Technica ATH-ES55

AIAIAI Tracks, I love the design of these and that they have a mic and control for the iDevices

I've only put closed-back headphones, but I'm open to in-ear as well. I'm looking to spend around $200 but I don't mind more or less if they are great!

If you can recommend others or you have listened to any of these, I would appreciate some thoughts on them.

Thanks so much!
http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/6806/stereo-microphone-beyerdynamic-mce72 Stereo Microphone (BeyerDynamic MCE72) oinkaudio 2011-03-24T13:10:34Z 2011-03-24T23:02:53Z
Hi,

Just wanted to know if anyone had any reviews or experiences with using the BeyerDynamic MCE72 stereo mic? How does it compare with other stereo mics?

Thanks.
http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/4581/any-reviews-on-ircam-spat-plugin Any reviews on IRCAM SPAT plugin? I saw a demo of it at AES this year and it seemed pretty nice.
http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/3752/amusing-faux-pas-situations Amusing Faux Pas Situations ianjpalmer 2010-09-23T16:42:55Z 2010-09-28T12:32:54Z
I've been inspired to share this story after reading David Farmer's article on Designing Sound.

I do remote mix reviews where the directer is in a room in LA watching off of a DigiBeta or HDCAM deck, sending me TC and I'm sending them the sound from the studio in sync with their picture.

There was one week where I was ridiculously busy and was doing something else in my studio while the episode played back (with the volume turned down but not off). 12 minutes later the director and producer came over the intercomm and said "another great mix finished". Hurrah! we all cried. Well, until I noticed that ProTools was sat there with all the automation turned off. With luck the faders were all at a point where the dialogue was louder than the ambiences etc etc. No-one noticed a thing. To save my own face and theirs I just said excellent and we'll speak to them next week.

My mixing isn't that bad surely!?!?

Anyone else had amusing stories they can share?
http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/2374/anyone-used-a-sanken-cs-2 Anyone used a Sanken CS-2?
