Have a fun SFX recording session going down Sunday - Source is going to be about 140 - 150db, about 100m from me.

Definitely bringing some high SPL shotguns, but was considering using a dynamic. The thing about dynamics is that their frequency response tends to get a little wonky after a distance, but the level of the sound tends to "extend" their reach.

What's the furthest you've ever successfully (as in got a good sound out of) used a dynamic mic?

For me, I think it was about 10m, while recording gun shots.

What are you using to search the SFX you bring to sessions on your drives? I have thought about Soundminer so that I may have metadata access as ProTools will only search file names and any comments written in ProTools. But I am concerned I will not be able to run the Soundminer application from the SFX drive and will need to install software on each system I go to. How are you doing it?

Hi, here's the thing. We've got three editing stations(Mac Pro). At each of them there's a Soundminer V4Pro, we haven't got the server edition. Currenlty our database consists of over 1 TB SFX. They're all on a D-Link hard drive with LAN support. We are using samba to connect the drive to each of stations. It works, however we don't have much control of all the LAN traffic. Do You have a better solution? Our goal is to improve the download transfer from the LAN storage, and also to have a history of downloads for each station. Thanks for all answers! Regards

i've got a mini series set in 1941 canada and i'm looking for north american vehicles from the 1939 to 1941 range.

sound effect recordings for cars like (or similar to)...

cadillac series 62/
Packard 120/
FORD Mercury Club Coupe ; Town Sedan; Marmon-Herrington sedan/
Chevrolet Master DeLuxe; Convertible Coupe; Fleetline/
Buick Special Series Touring Sedan/
Chrysler Sedan; Royal/
Plymouth 2door Sedan.

i've also some large trucks and military vehicles that i need to find sound for as well.

i'll only need the usual standard stuff (start, idle, away / in, idle, off / pass bys: gravel & asphalt)

if there's someone who knows their vintage vehicles i could send some screen shots to, so i can find out what make some of these are, it would help me in tracking down the sounds i'll need.

if you own recordings, or can point me in the right direction to some sounds, i would really appreciate it.

What are the exact tasks that a sound effects editor is expected to fulfill? Apart from choosing the effect and editing it, are we expected to also mix, place the SFX in a space, EQ to context, etc.? I'm in a smaller team so I do a lot more than just edit, but it's sometimes had for me to know the expected boundaries from one team member to the next.

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/10031/any-tips-for-cutting-designing-airplanes-battle-sceneAny tips for cutting/designing airplanes battle sceneMarcin2011-08-31T18:53:49Z2011-09-05T18:30:14Z

Hi guys!
I'm cutting sounds for II WW plane battle scene and I have faced few problems. This is a 3d animation and planes are doing many complicated moves. Few questions:

1) Do you pitch down and up engine/prop sound if a plane is going up and down, or you just simply put dopplered whooshing sounds/pass bys when plane is doing such moves? or maybe both?

2) What do you do if you have close ups with two planes - I mean, do you try to put engine/prop sounds for both of them and make them a little bit different with Eq, maybe pitching a little bit? When I layer sounds for both of them I can hear phasing between them and it's definitely not that what I would expect. Or, if they're in phase they're sounding uniform soo... or maybe just focus on one plane which is more important at the moment?

3) Would you recommend any movies to analyze?

4) Any sound design tips for airplane sounds (planes in animation are P51, so the engine is rolls royce merlin V12) or maybe you have some sounds you like to layer in such sequences? (I know stuff with fans and vacuums)

Hi. I’m cutting SFX for a car chase scene. Very stoked-my first time.
I’ve been doing some reading about techniques and such…

Chris Assells has some solid tips on the 5th page of this recent interview in Mix Magazine: http://mixonline.com/post/features/movie_sound_effects/index4.html
What have you come across online (or in a part of a book perhaps) that you found helpful?

I always like to record some audio assets for a project. Unfortunately, I don’t have the opportunity to this time and will be using library SFX. In a perfect scenario, what sounds would like to record for use cutting a car chase scene? Do you have any particular libraries that you like to use for car chases?

I’ve intently watched the Bourne trilogy’s car chase scenes and admire the job that the sound department did. There are many others for inspiration, what car chase scenes do you think sound awesome?

This experience is going to be great for growing in knowledge. I appreciate your input.

Thanks. Peace!

Guess I can't embed video in comments(?). Anyway... As mentioned in the thread, I too really dig the opening chase in Quantum-

Does anyone have any sfx of a suitcase being wheeled on cobblestone? I've been working on a feature the past two weeks, and have to finish it up by next week, and I don't have the time to go out to the actual location and record it.

Dear all

I'll planning to sort some of the stuff in my sfx libraries. I'll move to Soundminer and thinking to tag and add metadata to all my libraries (I'll start, but I already know that it'll be a loooooong project).

I'm Italian so I'm thinking: should I tag and rename all my libraries (self recorded and bought) in italian (much easier to do and to work with) or should I do that in english (a little more difficult to do and to use but much more consistent with any new library that i could buy and much more usefull if I'll move outside italy for work)?
What dou you french/spanish/whereverintheworldareyou do? :)

thanks in advance

I am always searching for new combination of sounds to run as the source and impulse in a convolution plugin. I'm not looking for reverbs so much as cool sfx.

I once heard a flame whoosh sent through a glass breaking and it ended up sounding ice fireball! Got any good suggestions? Do you have better success with shorter longer impulses? Recorded sounds or synth tones?

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/4477/sfx-library-codewordssfx library codewordsRene2010-11-08T16:15:27Z2011-07-24T19:01:13Z

Once your library reaches a certain size then you start needing codewords to jump to the specific sounds you're looking for quickly. This is especially true with common sounds like impacts, whooshes and UI.

For example, I have a batch of custom UI servo digital sounds that I tag with the word "clix" on them, because I know that if I just search that term nothing else in any of the purchased libraries will show up.

I also have a huge batch of custom impacts that we call "etolls" here because the first batch was inspired by a Robert Etoll library that a director brought into the facility. The library left with the director when the project was finished, but the sounds inspired me to make some of my own. At this point I've built hundreds of our own custom "etolls", and everyone in the facility uses that specific search term to find those specific sounds. (I should change them to Coronados, but that'd throw everyone off) :)

The other helpful thing is that soundminer includes file structure in the search, so I can look for "dapg amb" and get all of the custom ambiances I've recorded here at Dallas Audio Post Group - since all of our custom stuff lives in its own master "DAPG" folder.

I also tend to tag these boutique libraries so that I can find them quickly. I know exactly what I'll get if I look for a "tim seal" or a "rabbit rocket"

So, do you use specific code words to isolate the cream from the rest of the crop when doing sfx searches? What kinds of words do you use?

I use pro tools to edit all my SFX recordings and was wondering why some people use Pro Tools and a separate wave editor. I was looking at http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/waveeditor/ and can't seem to find anything special that it does that pro tools can not.

This is a "what is that" sort of question, and also, a "why can't I find an example of it" question.

In some older martial arts movies, and goofy action sequences, the action will slow down as some flies through the air, or does something incredible and instead of music or a slow-mo sound, there is this really reverb-y "tick tick tick tick". I don't think it's used seriously any more.

So questions are:
-Can you give an example, cause I sure can't find one.
-Does it have a name?
-How is/was it first made?

Thank ya!

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/4213/workflow-getting-sounds-into-your-libraryWorkflow: Getting sounds into your library.ragamesound2010-10-20T18:52:01Z2010-10-23T21:02:49Z

Sound design is like cooking in a lot of ways. When you cook a giant meal, it's a lot of fun. But the clean-up is boring. What they say when you're learning to cook is that you have to clean-up as you go.

Which brings me to my question: What's your workflow for getting sounds you've recorded into your library? Do you immediately crop them into useful samples when they're recorded? Or do you do what I do and let them all pile up in the sink until they're swarming with flies and you can't scrape the damn rice from the bottom of the pot?

Errr.... Uhm... There's a useful metaphor in there somewhere.

Hello everybody,

I am a University student in the UK and I was hoping that you may be able to give me some guidance on my final year project.

The main aim is: To demonstrate whether using low budget studio equipment can produce the same emotional affect during gameplay/theatrical trailer as using expensive industry standard professional kit.

I will be recording sound for a racing game trailer but am finding it difficult to plan some of the recordings.

I have read many articles on how to record cars and suitable microphones and techniques. One of the main problems is that I don't have access to empty roads or professional racing drivers, does anyone have any suggestions on the best ways to get engine sounds (accelerating and changing gears), tyre spins, car drifts/skids and car pass bys?

Baring in mind I don't have much budget on this and will be renting most of the equipment from University or a shop.

Thanks in advance.

Yep, it´s workflow question time again, so: when you create a sound effect, are you saving a file for every sound you create? I am not talking about the finished soundfile but the file that is used to construct it. What do you do when you want to change a little parameter on that wonderful "bkrz"-sound - 4 months after you created it?
