I've used this for years now and am very happy. Plus if the keyboard breaks or stops working you can quickly replace it without it affecting work.

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/11814/remote-work-how-do-go-about-setting-it-up/11822#11822Answer by ianjpalmer for Remote work, how do go about setting it up?ianjpalmer2011-12-11T10:13:04Z2011-12-11T10:13:04Z
I've done a LOT of remote work. I've used the same method that Stavro mentioned of simply sending the audio for them to sync in their edit suite and review, then send me notes. I find it a nice laid back workflow method studio billing time for reviews is taken out of the equation.

I used to work in a place that did remote reviews live via ISDN where we sent the stereo mix to LA and we could also talk normally at the same time via a simple patching system. It's also possible to do the same via IP APT are one company who make such devices - http://www.aptcodecs.com/radio.html

Source Connect (http://www.source-elements.com/source-connect/) make ProTools plugins that do the same job, also via the internet. I've had patchy results but mainly due to bottlenecks appearing somewhere between myself and the other studio and that's the fault of internet infrastructure and nothing else.

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/11609/how-to-record-an-feature-animation-dialogue/11615#11615Answer by ianjpalmer for How to record an feature animation dialogue?ianjpalmer2011-11-29T13:00:06Z2011-11-29T13:00:06Z
I've not recorded feature dialogue but I have done TV animation dialogue. We decided to keep it simple in the records and do any perspective changes required in the show during post. This is because there were no storyboards to work with and also because our cast was made up mainly of under 10 year olds.

We recorded each character separately and positioned the actor about a foot away from the mic and with a pop-shield in place. This gave us nice dry dialogue to work with but without a lot of mouth noise and clack, especially good for the kid's performances.

I don't think there's a right or wrong way to do this as there's advantages and disadvantages to the way I work and what Andy just said.

I disagree with Conant who's response seems a little naive to practicalities of life. I would love to record all the sounds I need but there simply isn't time (and budget) to do such things in the world of quick turn around TV work.

Besides, another argument is why would I spend time and money recording, cleaning, editing, labeling basic things like footsteps when I can buy them for very little money and be using them in within minutes of purchase. That's less time than I would spend setting up a recorder. Additionally, there's some sounds that would be extremely difficult to source due to the props needed (guns are not easily available in the UK for example) or their location. Why would I travel thousands of miles to record ambiances I can easily source from a library?

On the flip side nothing takes me out of a film or TV show like recognising a sound from a library.

I've bought two systems in my career so far and each time has been bought so I can do a particular job I've got. I agree with Tim that you need to be careful as a freelancer but there are times you have to have the tools for the job.

Do you need something vs do you want something?

That said I have bought a few toys recently that I didn't need but were in various sales and at a price I could afford, their normal RRP being way too high.

Others here also mention (and I agree) that you get an awful lot for little money these days. I'd love some of the recording gear others use but as I don't need to do a lot of recording for work I am happy with my extremely cheap H1 for now. I also find that limitations force you to approach problems with a healthy attitude. Throwing money at a problem isn't always the best option.

I do like the irony of a social group of competitors. Having spent a lot of time socialising online (there's pretty much zero socialising within the industry where I live) in the last year I've fallen in with a really nice bunch of people (on Twitter). There's people who are well into their careers and those just starting out or even still at Uni. We all have a grand old time though and I've not come across any unpleasantness at all. We all congratulate each other's successes and give support to anyone with problems.

This site too is like that too. Where else can one go to ask questions and not be patronised or beaten down for asking such a "stupid" question?

We are all competitors but that doesn't stop the notion of healthy competition. It's like we've all realised it makes for a nicer world with added benefits (such as tech support or feedback on ones work).

Long may it continue.

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/6737/do-you-read-scripts/6743#6743Answer by ianjpalmer for Do you read scripts?ianjpalmer2011-03-22T09:33:23Z2011-03-22T09:33:23Z
Speaking from a purely post production point of view I always prefer to read a script beforehand. I think it helps in a variety of ways, some aesthetic and some practical. It enables me to source difficult or specific sounds before production has started for example.

I also find it helps get a feel for a film/series, especially in animation where the editing is often more an assembly and probably wont be straying too far from the script.

If nothing else it can help start a dialogue between you and the Director/Producer which we all know is best to start as early as possible to ensure you're all on the same page from the off.

http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/6475/soundsnap-com-feedback/6479#6479Answer by ianjpalmer for Soundsnap.com feedbackianjpalmer2011-03-11T09:49:24Z2011-03-11T09:49:24Z
I'm one of your "old school" members. I have to say I love the idea of the site. I use it a lot for getting something specific or different (as in not in the usual libraries) and has got me out of a hole plenty of times.

However I do have 2 things I'd like to add. There's one thing I wish you'd bring back, the ability for me to upload and sell individual sound recordings. I'm guessing that the vetting process which I'm sure is a mammoth undertaking.

My other issue is that some of the sounds are of a fairly poor quality. Some have background hiss and hum while others are clipped. I don't want to get into naming files and therefore people but it has rendered some files unusable in a TV broadcast setting. Perhaps vetting the person instead of every single file might be a way around the workload. Or perhaps you could add a way of reporting a poor recording and make the users become the vettors (is that a word)?

Please forgive me if this comes across harsh but I really do love the site and am frequently on there looking for sounds.

Good luck with it and long may it continue!

Hello all,

I'm curious how other people do this. I've never actually had to mix an M&E before as it was all done for me in the mixer routing in ProTools (I also had totally clean dialogue as the shows were all animations).

Now I'm doing a live-action show that will have all the footsteps etc. replaced to create the M&E track.

I'm thinking of either mixing all the extra sfx/foley along with the dialogue so that it will be at an appropriate level with regards to the actual mix, or would it be better to just mix it as a seperate thing so it sounds correct and imagine how it would work underneath dialogue.

Cheers

2 great examples are Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. Voldemort and Dumbledore are duelling at the end. Voldemort appears to take in a lot of black stuff (magic?) into his hands, he then flings his hands open and creates a tremendous shockwave. I thought the sounds was really well done and used this technique brilliantly.

Another great example is in Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers when an Uruk Hai runs towards some explosives beneath the wall of Helm's Deep. The sound dips just prior to the explosion. Again, another good example.

However, I wouldn't use sounds with CC licence in any commercial work. As far as I understand if I did the company I work for would have to reference the use in the end credits. There isn't enough room in the credits for every single person who has worked on a show as it is let alone adding dozens of references for sound effects use. This problem renders and CC SFX useless to me personally.

On the flip side I appreciate that any sounds I have put on Sound Cloud come with this protection which makes me more comfortable having my own work online.

One of the quietest places I've been was a cave about 50ft underground in South Wales. Apart from our own noise and an occasional drip it was total silence. It had the pitch blackness to match too. We all only lasted about 2 or 3 minutes until someone wanted a light turned back on.

However, idealism is something we all share but as one progresses with their career and spends more and more time working to deadlines it soon becomes clear how useful libraries are.
We work in an artistic medium which is incredibly important to our culture and society. But let's be realistic, it's not important in the big scheme of things. Things like family and friends are far more important. It's all about work-life balance, something even the great Ben Burtt commented on that recently.http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/9813/social-sound-design-meetup/9819#9819Comment by ianjpalmerianjpalmer2011-08-24T07:06:12Z2011-08-24T07:06:12ZWasn't in the country for the first one and my wife was ill on the second one.
